#16 Swarthmore Rolls Past #11 Tartans
CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Swarthmore picked up a big win on Tuesday afternoon, downing 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon 8-1 on the annual Garnet spring break trip.
Swarthmore (2-1 overall) exacted revenge on the Tartans (3-1), who brought an end to a 12-match Garnet win streak in 2006 by winning the teams' NCAA Division III Tournament Regional match 5-2. The win on Saturday could benefit Swarthmore at the end of the season, as CMU is currently ranked fourth in the Atlantic South region with the Garnet sitting in sixth position.
Garnet seniors Sonya Reynolds and Waverly Lutz, sophomore Jennie Park and freshman Rachel Wallwork all picked up wins in doubles and singles action.
Reynolds has won all three of her spring matches in straight sets, including a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Tartans' Amy Stolach (the top-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South region at No. 1 singles. Reynolds and doubles partner Sara Sargent '07 collected an impressive 8-5 over Stolach and Mona Ayer at No. 1 doubles. Ayer and Stolach finished third at the 2006 ITA Small College Championships and are currently listed second in the region. Reynolds and Sargent are ranked second in the Atlantic South.
Swarthmore concludes the Spring Break tour of southern California on Saturday, March 17 when they face eighth-ranked University of the South.
