Women’s Lacrosse: Garnet Outlast Fords, Tie Win Record
HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Garnet raced to a 7-2 halftime advantage and held on in the second half for a 9-6 win over rival Haverford on Tuesday afternoon. Junior midfielder Lindsay Roth scored her fifth hat trick of the season to lead the Swarthmore attack.
The win is Swarthmore's 13th of the season, equaling the school record set by the 1995 team (13-4).
Roth was hot early, scoring the first two goals of the game during the first six minutes. Shortly after, classmate Katie Crawford found the back of the net to give the Garnet a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Zoe Lloyd got the Fords on the board but the Garnet were far from done. Midfielders Anna de Regt '09 and Megan Sanborn '08 scored consecutive free-position goals, and Roth finished out the hat trick with 6:57 to play in the period to extend the lead to 6-1. Sharon O'Neill scored for the home team, but de Regt tickled the twine once again to bring the lead back to five at the break.
Haverford controlled much of the second half, outshooting the Garnet 21-9 while winning the turnover battle 10-6. After Crawford and Sanborn scored midway through the period to give Swarthmore a 9-3 lead, the Fords held the Garnet scoreless for the rest of the game.
But Blair was on her game and made 14 saves in the half to stop the Haverford comeback in its tracks. The Fords managed only one goal in the final 13 minutes of play.
Roth's three goals put her in front in the team scoring department (35 points, 29 goals).
Swarthmore (13-3) improves to 5-3 in Centennial Conference play with the win. The Garnet can clinch a playoff berth with a win at Ursinus on Saturday or with a McDaniel loss at #1 Gettysburg tomorrow or at Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Saturday's Swarthmore-Ursinus matchup will have seeding implications. Game time in Collegeville, Pa. is 1:00 p.m.
