Garnet Caught in Bear Trap
Lindsay Roth '07 (above) paced the Garnet with four goals but it was not enough as Swarthmore (7-6, 2-5) fell to Ursinus (7-3, 6-1) 16-6 in Centennial Conference play on Clothier Field.
Aubrey Andre and Ashley Ettinger each scored four goals to lead the Bears. Andre got the Bears on the board first when she scored an unassisted goal at 28:18 and then made it 2-0 at 26:36 when she bounced home a Logan Conklin pass.
Roth cut the lead in half with a free position goal just over a minute later but Andre struck again at 22:04 to post the hat trick, giving Ursinus a 3-1 lead. Heidi Fielselmann '06 countered at 18:52 to get the Garnet to within one goal and Ettinger made it 4-2 with an unassisted goal at 14:40. Roth scored unassisted just 36 seconds later to close to within one.
That was as close as the Garnet would get the rest of the game as the Bears then went on to score the next four goal to open up a 8-3 lead. Roth added her third goal of the game with 4:19 remaining to make it 8-4 at the break.
Logan Conklin and Lindsay Givens then recorded back to back goals just 11 seconds apart to give Ursinus a 10-4 advantage at 28:39. The squads then took turns scoring as Natalie Schroeter and Debbie Jensen alternated goals with Fieselmann and Roth to make it 12-6 with 17:17 remaining. Ettinger added two more goals and Givens and Schroeter each scored to make the final 16-6.
The Bears held a 37-15 advantage in shots as Sussanah Blair '08 made 14 stops in goal for the Garnet.
Tuesday the Garnet travel to 12th-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a 5 p.m. Centennial contest.
