Swarthmore Cages Bears 3-1
Senior tri-captain Patrice Berry recorded a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs, leading the Garnet to a 3-1 victory over Ursinus in Centennial action on Tuesday night in Collegeville, Pa. Swarthmore (11-7, 4-2 Centennial) won by scores of 30-26, 27-30, 30-12, 30-23.
The Garnet out-distanced the Bears (4-14, 0-6 CC) in game one and then found themselves a hole in game two, down 28-17. Freshman libero Erin Heaney righted the ship, serving nine consecutive points to even the game 28-28. The Bears stopped the rally short, taking game two 30-27. Swarthmore gathered themselves during the break and easily captured games three and four to claim their fourth Centennial victory.
Outside hitter Jennifer Wang '09 recorded a team-high 13 kills and sophomore middle blocker Katie Gold chipped in with 10 kills of her own. Senior tri-captain Emily Conlon was the offensive catalyst once again, collecting 33 assists. Heaney added 15 digs on the Garnet defensive side, aided by seven blocks from Vanessa Wells '08 and five blocks from Karen Berk '08.
The Garnet will be up early tomorrow morning for a long flight to southern California. Swarthmore will spend four days in Pomona, matching up against Claremont-McKenna, Pomona-Pitzer, Chapman, and UC-Santa Cruz. The first match is set for 3:00 p.m. (PCT) on Friday, October 14 vs. Claremont-McKenna.
