#14 Hopkins Soaks Garnet 2-1

Blue Jay forward Lauren Baumann headed in a corner kick at 64:02 to send 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 2-1 win at Swarthmore on a rainy Friday night at Clothier Field.

The Blue Jays were the first ones on the board in the first half.  A Hopkins cross from the right side took a big hop over freshman Swarthmore goalkeeper Lauren Walker's head and Blue Jay midfielder Francesca Peretti ran the ball into the net at 33:07.

The rain continued to drizzle through out the first half.  The Garnet kept looking for holes in the Blue Jay defense, and with eight and half minutes left in the half Swarthmore freshman midfielder Melinda Petre found one.  Petre battled with a Hopkins defender on the left side of the Blue Jays box, getting free enough to send a cross to the top of the circle.  Swarthmore forward Danielle Tocchet '08 was in the right spot at the right time, wasted little time in volleying the ball past Hopkins keeper Kerry Hamilton at 36:39.  It was her team-high fifth goal of the season.

The score remained 1-1 into a wet intermission.

The Blue Jays came back to take the lead for good midway through the second half.  Defender Jessi McKenzie sent a corner kick across the Garnet goal mouth and Baumann out-jumped a host of Swarthmore defenders to head the ball home for the game-winner.  It was Baumann's sixth goal of the year.

The Garnet defense held up once again, withstanding a 26-2 Blue Jay shot advantage.  Kristen Traband '08 made two saves in her first start of the season and Walker added eleven stops in relief as Swarthmore dropped to 2-8-3 overall and 0-4-2 in the Centennial.

Swarthmore takes a weeklong break in between contest; the Garnet travel to Maryland on Saturday, October 15 for their next action.  Swarthmore will battle with McDaniel College at 1:00 p.m. in Centennial Conference action.
