Garnet Advance Past Mt. Holyoke
Swarthmore breezed through their first round match at the 2005 Seven Sisters Championship, defeating Mt. Holyoke 3-0 on Saturday morning in Tarble Pavilion. The Garnet won by scores of 30-25, 30-15, 30-17.
Jennifer Wang '09 (Palo Alto, CA - Henry Gunn) led Swarthmore with 15 kills, and sophomores Karen Berk (Havertown, PA - Haverford) and Katie Gold (Cherry Hill, NJ - Cherry Hill East) added 8 kills apiece. Senior setter Emily Conlon (Marlborough, CT - Loomis Chafee) facilitated the offense once again, handing out 34 assists. Wang also led the squad with 11 digs, her seventh double-double of the year, senior Patrice Berry (Hagerstown, MD - North Hagerstown) added nine digs of her own, and Berk led the Garnet with five blocks.
Junior Emily Groth (Franklin, MA - Franklin) led Mt. Holyoke with 9 kills, while senior Bis Cole (Clayton, MO - Whitfield) and senior Sarah Maruffo (Tulsa, OK - Booker T. Washington) added five kills each. Sophomore setter Rachel West (St. Paul, MN - Central) contributed a team-high 23 digs and 19 assists.
The Garnet improve to 10-5 overall and will face Wellesley at 1:00 p.m. in a second-round match-up. Mt. Holyoke will face Elms in the other 1:00 p.m. contest.
