Garnet Tramp Thru Rain at Danny Curran Invite
Sarah Hobbs '06 missed a meet record by a tenth of a second, while Debbie Farrelly '06 and Laura Fety '06 won their individual heats as Swarthmore ran through the rain drops at the Danny Curran Invitational hosted by Widener University on April 2nd.
Hobbs ran in the first 1500 meter heat, posting a time of 4:57.09. The junior finished third, behind Villanova's Kirsty Smith (4:34.62) and All-American Joanna Simonis from Bryn Mawr (4.52.41), both of whom broke the previous meet record set by Swarthmore's Njideka Akunyili' '04 (4:56.59).
Farrelly (above), running in her first collegiate 1500 meter race, caught Villanova's Christina Rossetti on the final turn and passed her to win the second heat in a time of 5:06.57.
Fety posted the top time in the 5000 meter run out of 14 runners, crossing the finish line in a time of 19:19.17.
Jessica Zagory '05 continued to register quality heights in the high jump, leaping 4'8", good for ninth-best in school history. In other field events, Rebecca Burrow '08 finished second in the long jump with a distance of 15'0" while Sam Graffeo '07 tossed the shot the fifth-farthest in school history (34' 6.25").
Swarthmore will compete next in the April 9th Delaware Invitational, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
