Tide Rises Over Pioneers
First-years Franny Zhang and Jennie Lewis each won three events to lead the Garnet to a 121-82 season-opening victory over visiting Widener.
Zhang touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (2:00.12) and the 100 freestyle (55:54) and Lewis sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle (25.55) and 100 butterfly (1:01.65) to pace the Tide. The duo then teamed up with Sarah Cotcamp '07 and Whitney Nekoba '08 to win the evening's final event, the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:43.63.
The Garnet jumped out to an early lead winning the first four events. Katie Schmidt '07, Michele Hom '07, Kathryn Jantz '05 and Sarah Cotcamp '07 breezed to an easy victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.98.
Katherine Reid '05 (11:12.07) and Katie Altynova '08 (11:20.29) went 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle to build a 28-8 advantage. Zhang then led a sweep of the 200 freestyle with Jantz and Nekoba to make it 44-11. The trio then went on to sweep the 200 freestyle as well.
Schmidt led Christie Tomm '05 and Erin Dwyer-Frazier '05 to the Garnet's third sweep of the evening in capturing the 100 backstroke in 1:05.65.
The Garnet host McDaniel on Saturday at 2:00 in the Centennial Conference opener.
