Status Report on Friday’s Campus Network Outage

For much of this spring semester ITS staff have been chasing down several issues causing network instability.  One of the causes was failing fiber optic cable which has been located and replaced. We also identified a bug in the network operating system running on some of our core network switches.  We have been working with Juniper engineers (Juniper is the company that manufactures our networking equipment) for several weeks to identify and fix the problem.  This may sound like a lot of time but this is a complicated issue and had to be escalated through Juniper technical support. Internet/VPN Maintenance Wednesday 2/22/12 at 6 PM

ITS will be conducting brief maintenance on the Internet connection tomorrow, Wednesday, February 22nd. Between 6:00 and 6:30 PM, there will be a 15 minute Internet outage. VPN connections will also be interrupted at this time. Note: The ITS maintenance window for short, non-critical interruptions in network services is Wednesday from 6-7 PM. Swarthmore College has joined EDUROAM

EDUROAM is an international group of colleges and universities that allow people from member institutions to use each other’s wireless networks, without jumping through any special hoops. EDUROAM is relatively new in the United States. In fact, we are the first small liberal arts college to join. However, there are thousands of member institutions in Europe and it is growing elsewhere as well.  For example, there are over 150 places in France where you can use your Swarthmore College userID and password to get on their wireless network. Wireless Users May Need To Use Configuration Tool

Starting next Tuesday, August 9th at 9 AM, wireless devices may need to go through a one-time setup procedure to continue using wireless networking at Swarthmore.  This procedure is required because we will be implementing a new wireless authentication server using a new security certificate at that time.  The procedure will automatically configure your device to work with the new server.  The process takes less than 5 minutes.
