Gettysburg Gets By Field Hockey on Senior Day, 2-1

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Despite a tenacious attack and gritty goalkeeping from senior Katie Ashmore, the Swarthmore College field hockey team’s playoff hopes took hit on Saturday afternoon, as it was defeated by Gettysburg 2-1 from Clothier Field Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of a huge crowd on hand for Garnet Homecoming Weekend and Senior Day.

Ferguson scored the Garnet's lone goal on senior day.

With two games remaining in regular season play, the Garnet now stands at 3-5 in Centennial Conference play.

The Garnet was outplayed offensively in the first half, taking only four shots (just two on goal) against Gettysburg’s nine. But at the end of 35 minutes of play, the score was deadlocked at one apiece, thanks to senior Sophia Ferguson’s eighth goal of the season in the 28th minute – fitting, as Senior Day ceremonies prior to the game had just honored the four-year forward.

Throughout the second half, Gettysburg continued to put pressure on the Swarthmore defense, taking 11 shots to the Garnet’s four. The Bullets’ Nicole Meredyth scored her second goal of the day in the 39th minute, putting Gettysburg up 2-1. However, Swarthmore continued to play tough through the whole game, putting two shots on goal in the 64th minute. Freshman Aarti Rao’s shot from the top of the box was only kept from being the game-tying play by a leaping save from Gettysburg goalie Megan Feeg.

Much of the Garnet’s relentless play can be accredited to Ashmore  -  another Senior Day honoree - and a Garnet defense who faced twenty shotsbut allowed just two goals. Sophomore Catie Meador made a goal-saving defensive save in the

The Garnet faces Haverford in its final home matchup of the season on Wednesday. Play is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
