Volleyball Falls on Day Two of Cal Lutheran Fall Classic

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Swarthmore volleyball team (15-8, 5-1 CC) had a tough Saturday at the Fall Classic with another five set heart-breaker to Whittier College (5-17)and three set loss to host Cal Lutheran (18-3).

Sophomore Kat Montemurro and junior Genny Pezzola would lead the Garnet offense combining for 43 kills on the day.

GAME ONE

Montemurro had 17 kills and three service aces against the Poets.

Swarthmore found itself in another five set battle on Saturday morning against the Whittier poets.  After falling in a close first set 25-23, the Garnet would fight back to win the next two sets 25-19 and 25-20.  The Poets would win the equalizer 25-13 to push the match into a fifth set where Whittier would win 15-9.

Montemurro had a great game, leading Swat with 17 kills and three service aces for a .343 hitting percentage.  Pezzola followed with 11 kills and two service aces.

Freshmen Danielle Lobichusky (6) and Danielle Sullivan (8) combined for 14 kills.

Sophomore Allison Coleman had an amazing 35 assists to set up the Swat offense.

Defensive specialist, junior Hillary Santana controlled the court once again with 29 digs in the game while Pezzola would also make her presence known on defense with 16 digs.

The Garnet were dominant at the net with 10 blocks; Lobichusky and Coleman would each have three blocks while Montemurro would knock down two.

GAME TWO

Swarthmore faced off with a very strong Cal Lutheran squad who leads its conference to close out the weekend.  Swat would fall 25-15 and 25-16 in the first two sets but would fight back in set three, pressing the Regal's defense to the finish before falling 25-21.

The Garnet offensive team of Pezzola and Montemurro led the attack again.  Pezzola would post eight kills while Montemurro would drop seven.

Pezzola had a great day for Swat with 19 kills and 24 digs.

Santana picked up 15 more digs in the match to make it 44 for the day.  Senior Sarah Lambert added 10 more digs for the Swat defense while Pezzola would have eight digs.

The Swarthmore volleyball team returns to Pennsylvania and to Centennial Conference play on Wednesday October 20 at Ursinus.  Play is set for 7:00 PM.
