Garnet Women Remain Hot, Defeat Stevenson 2-0 for Fifth-Straight Win
Owing Mills, Md. - Led by second-half goals from seniors Hannah Purkey and Kirsten Peterson, the streaking Swarthmore College women’s soccer team (7-4-2) stretched its run of victories to five, taking down the Stevenson Mustangs (9-6) by a 2-0 score in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon
Although the score was tied at the end of the first half, it was apparent which team had the upper hand in play. The Swarthmore defense kept Stevenson almost entirely away from the net, limiting them to just two shots over the first period, none on goal. Swarthmore, on the other hand, doubled that number in the first half, and it was only a matter of time before the Garnet girls opened the game up.
Indeed, not four minutes into the second half, the scoreless tie was snapped as Purkey netted her second goal of the season, assisted by seniors Elizabeth Mills and Megan Colombo. Kristen Peterson would add her third of the season in the 59th minute to cap the scoring, but the Garnet defense proved additional support unnecessary. Even more impenetrable in the second half than in the first, Swarthmore limited the Mustangs to a single shot in the final 45 minutes of play, an 84th minute kick that sailed over the net.
In goal for the Garnet, senior Marie Mutryn and freshman Kaitlyn Sipiora were flawless, each notching 45 scoreless minutes.
The Swarthmore women hope to remain at the top of Centennial Conference standings when they visit Ursinus for a conference tilt on Wednesday. Action is scheduled to begin at 4 pm.
