Garnet Rally Falls Short as McDaniel Defeats Field Hockey 4-2

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Sophia Ferguson and sophomore Catie Meador both scored second-half goals for the Swarthmore College field hockey team (6-8, 3-3), but it wasn't enough to a erase a four-goal first half deficit to visiting McDaniel, as the Garnet fell 4-2 on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.

Ferguson added a late goal for the Garnet.

Meador's score came on a penalty stroke - her third of the season -  in the 42nd minute, while Ferguson scored off a great assist from sophomore Sophia Agathis in the 68th minute, but it was too little, too late, as the Green Terror scored four goals over a 14-minute span in the first half, building a 4-0 lead that Swat could not overcome.

The game opened with plenty of scoring chances for the Garnet, as Ferguson, Agathis and freshman Aatri Rao  all put shots on goal in the opening seven minutes of play. But Swat could not find the back of the cage, and the tide quickly turned in the 15th minute, as the Green Terror got on the scoreboard with its first shot of the game, as Paige Messersmith's front of the net goal gave McDaniel a 1-0 lead.

From there, the Green Terror would open it up even more, scoring three more goals over the next 10 minutes. Danielle DeColli scored once and Sarah Meszler added two, giving the Green Terror a 4-0 lead at the 29-minute mark.

In the second half, Swarthmore played much better hockey, netting goals from Meador and Ferguson while outshooting McDaniel 9-3, but the deficit proved too large, as the Green Terror hung on for the 4-2 win.

In goal for Swarthmore, senior Katie Ashmore made four saves. Kaitlin Boerman added three assists for McDaniel.

The Garnet will continue its late-season push for a Centennial Conference playoff berth when it travels to No. 4 Ursinus on Wednesday. Action begins at 7:00 p.m.
