Shorewomen Navigate Past Garnet 5-1
CHESTERTOWN, MD - Impressive defense and an explosive Washington College (5-3, 3-0 CC) offense would prove to be too much for the Swarthmore field hockey team (3-6, 1-2 CC), as the Garnet fell to the Shorewomen 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.
Two unassisted Shorewomen goals by sophomore Kristen Wille and senior Danielle Rosato would come less than 12 minutes into the game. Junior Emily Trees would add to this scoring total at the 20-minute mark with a goal on a breakaway, leaving the game at 3-0 after one half of play.
The Garnet offense would have trouble answering back in the first half with senior goalkeeper Shannon Davis only allowing one shot on goal.
As the second half got underway, Swarthmore came out firing and the surge would lead to a goal on a penalty stroke by sophomore Catie Meador, bringing the score to 3-1. The Garnet would go on to tally 14 shots on goal in the second half.
Washington College was not finished on offense though, as Emily Trees would score her second goal in the 42nd minute and put the Shorewomen ahead 4-1. The final goal of the game would come courtesy of freshman Shannon Denno with under 4 minutes left, making the ending score 5-1 in favor of Washington.
Swarthmore will step back onto the field and face off against non-conference opponent Arcadia on October 6 at home. Action will begin at 4 PM.
