Peterson Ties Assist Mark as Garnet Women Blank Washington 2-0

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Senior Megan Colombo scored in the 14th minute off an assist from senior Kirsten Peterson while freshman Aly Passanante sealed with a goal in the 82nd minute as the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (3-4-2) blanked homestanding Washington College 2-0 on Wednesday.

With her assist, Peterson is now tied with E.B. Fortier '02 for the most career assists in program history (14). Also closing in on a program record thanks to their performance against the Shorewomen is Colombo, whose first-half goal gives her 24 for her career, just two away from the all-time program lead held by Madeline Fraser '95.

Peterson is now tied for the most career assists in program history.

In goal for the Garnet making her first collegiate start, freshman Kaitlyn Sipiora made four saves to earn the clean sheet.

Following a grueling stretch in which the Garnet faced three nationally-ranked opponents , the Garnet came out on fire in its in third consecutive Centennial Conference road contest, firing seven shots in the first 14 minutes of play against the Shorewomen (3-4-1). The constant pressure finally broke down the Shorewomen defense, as Peterson lifted a pass over the defense to an open Colombo, who beat the keeper to give the Garnet the early 1-0 lead.

From there, Swat continued to apply the pressure, attempting three more shots for the half  while Sipiora made a save on a header from Washington's Heather Smith in the 33rd minute to help the Garnet maintain the 1-0 lead through the half.

In the second half, the Garnet offense continued to control the tempo  - owning  a 9-3 advantage in shots  - and finally sealed the game in the 82nd minute thanks to a goal from one of its fabulous freshmen. Set up perfectly on an assist from junior Emily Coleman across the area, Passanante scored her second of the season, giving the Garnet a 2-0 lead that it would not relinquish.

Thanks in part to an excellent defensive performance that limited the Shorewomen's scoring chances,  Swarthmore held an 18-6 advantage in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

The Garnet return home on Saturday to host McDaniel. Action is slated  to begin at 7:00 and can be viewed via the Garnet Sports Network.
