Samuelson Earns Two Titles to Lead Garnet Tennis at ITA Regionals
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Katie Samuelson won the women’s Blue 2 Singles championship while pairing up with sophomore Stephanie Chia to capture the women’s Blue 2 doubles title to lead the Swarthmore College women’s tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships this weekend at the University of Mary Washington.
Samuelson began her singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Rachel Lupinetti in the round of 16. Her singles play continued when she bested Katy Bergey 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, moving on to semifinals, where she defeated Natalie Walten of Grove City 6-3, 6-1. Then in the flight championship match, Samuelson defeated Shannon Lauery of Dickinson 6-4, 6-2 to win the championship.
In the doubles event, Samuelson and Chia bested Kim Morrissett and Sarah Stafford of Christopher Newport to win the women’s Blue 2 doubles championship. Samuelson and Chia opened play in the round of 16 in an 8-1 victory over McGhee/Stone of Bridgewater, followed by an 8-0 win in the quarterfinals over Barnett/Beale.
In the championship singles flight, sophomore Emily Rosenblum bested Jillian Poppe of Salisbury in the first round, before falling to Johns Hopkins’ Carolyn Warren in the round of 32. In the consolation of the women’s championship singles, Chia and sophomore Kelsey Johnson defeated Madison Rabson 8-2 and Priscilla Montoya 8-2, respectively.
A trio of freshmen also faired well for the Garnet in the tournament. Freshman Aliya Padamsee defeated Julia Green 6-0, 6-0 to advance to women’s blue 2 singles quarterfinals, but was defeated by Sarah Stafford 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Brooke Wilkins defeated Jessica Holden 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round and Kelly Mehr 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals in the women’s blue 3 singles. Freshman Epiphany English defeated Meryl Schulman 6-0, 6-1 to advance to women’s blue 3 singles quarterfinal.
The tournament concludes the Fall season for the women's tennis team.
