Deming Goal Not Enough as Garnet Women Fall to No. 7 Johns Hopkins 4-1
BALTIMORE - Despite gutsy play and a 37th minute goal from junior forward Hannah Deming, the Swarthmore Garnet women’s soccer team (2-4-2, 1-1) fell by a 4-1 score to the Johns Hopkins on Saturday evening at Hopkins’ Homewood Field in Baltimore. The loss was Swarthmore’s first of the season in Centennial Conference play.
The Garnet (2-4-2, 1-1) battled nine-time conference champion Hopkins (7-1, 2-0) through the first half, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit to make it a 1-1 game at the half.
Following an initial Hopkins goal from Erin Stafford in the 18th minute on a shot that Mutryn saved first time but couldn’t pull in, the Garnet rallied to put pressure on the stingy Hopkins that eventually paid off in the 37th minute. On a ball played into the box by senior Elizabeth Mills, Deming one-touched a ball from about 20-yards and blasted a left footer across the goal into the upper right corner of the goal, making it a 1-1 game.
In the second half, the Blue Jays began to show why they were unanimously chosen as the conference’s top seed going into the 2010 season. Hopkins junior forward Paula Goodman from 12 yards out barely two minutes into the second half to put her team ahead for good. Additional goals from freshman Pamela Vranis ('61) and senior Jenn Paulucci ('75) cemented the Johns Hopkins victory.
“We just ran out of gas in the second half,” said head coach Todd Anckaitis. “We played a tough game on Wednesday and our team is battered and bruised right now and the conditions were hot.”
Despite the defeat, the Garnet defense made a strong showing, limiting the Hopkins chances throughout the game. Mutryn and freshman goalie Kaitlyn Sipiora combined for nine saves on the day. Deming’s goal was her second of the season, and senior Elizabeth Mills’ assist was her first of the year.
Swarthmore saw excellent first-half chances come from senior Megan Colombo and freshmen Aly Passanante, Megan Brock and Amber Famiglietti
The Garnet will try to get back on track when they travel to Washington College on Tuesday night. Play is set to begin at 7 p.m.
