Garnet Women, NYU Play to 2-2 Tie
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Seniors Megan Colombo and Kirsten Peterson each scored second-half goals for the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (2-3-1), but visiting NYU (2-5-1) responded with two late second half goals of their own, as the Garnet and Violets played to a 2-2 tie on Sunday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.
Erin Haggerty scored both second-half goals for the Violets, who erased a 2-0 Garnet lead with goals in the 70th and 87th minutes.
Goalkeeper Marie Mutryn played an outstanding game for the Garnet between the pipes, equaling a career-high with 12 saves, including an acrobatic save in the first overtime to preserve the tie.
The back-and-forth contest was scoreless into the second half, as the Garnet and Violets were able to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Then, over a span of eight minutes, two of the Garnet's senior leadersĀ - as well as two of the program's all-time scoring leaders - stepped up to give the Garnet the lead. In the 55th minute off a corner kick, sophomore Alexa Ross fielded a bouncing ball near the top of the box, lobbed a pass over the defense to a wide-open Colombo, who converted from point-blank range to give Swarthmore a 1-0 lead. (See video of the goal below). The goal is the 23rd of Colombo's career - which ranks second all-time behind Madeline Fraser (26).
In the 63th minute, it was Peterson who found the back of the net for the Garnet, as the senior took a ball that had deflected off an NYU defender in front of the net and scored her team-leading second goal to make it a 2-0 game.
But just as it looked as if Swat may run away with the contest, NYU struck back, as Haggerty scored the first of her two goals in the 70th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.
Then, in the final minutes of the game Haggerty struck again, scoring a beautiful goal over the outstretched hands of Mutryn into the upper-right-hand corner to the tie the game at 2-2.
In the first overtime, NYU controlled much of the play, recording four shots, including a perfect bending shot from 20-yards out from Emily Jenkinson that was only denied because of an excellent save from Mutryn . In the second overtime, it was Swat with the scoring chances, as freshmen Amber Famiglietti and Aly Passanante both put shots on goal, but to no avail. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.
In net for NYU, Alex Walters made six saves.
Swarthmore returns to action this Wednesday when it hosts No. 22 Eastern.
