Freshmen Impressive for Garnet Tennis at Swarthmore Fall Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshmen Preston Poon and Maximillian Kaye reached the Flights B and D  singles finals, respectively, while senior Mark Wee also posted a win as the Garnet hosted the Men’s Swarthmore Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

Wee earned a first-round win for the Garnet.

Facing stiff competition from Johns Hopkins and Division I University of Delaware, Swarthmore put up a strong showing on Day 1, with Kaye posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Delaware senior Chris Hincker, and Wee winning a 6-3, 6-1 Flight C match against UDel’s Nick Piacente.  Poon took a hard fought three set loss on the first day, falling in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 7-10.

Poon and Kaye were the only Swarthmore representatives in Sunday’s finals, falling to Delaware.

On the doubles side, sophomores James Wieler and Malik Mubeen took a tough 8-5 loss on Saturday to Delaware’s Jason Derene and Timothy Lozinak, while Kaye and Christian Carcione fell 8-6 to Delaware’s Robert Kay and Ryan Kent.

The tournament wraps up Swarthmore’s fall play until ITA regionals kick off on October 2 at Mary Washington.
