Volleyball Drops Two in Duck Classic Finale
HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team fell just short in its quest to capture three tournament championships in three weekends, as the Garnet (10-3) dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Stevens Duck Classic, losing to FDU Florham 3-0 ( 22-25, 23-25, 19-25 ) and host Stevens 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 18-25).
The losses snap the Garnet's eight-match winning streak.
For their efforts, junior Genny Pezzola and freshman Danielle Sullivan were named to the all-tournament team.
Game 1
FDU-Florham 3, Swarthmore 0 ( 22-25, 23-25, 19-25 )
The Garnet lost three close games to the eventual champion FDU-Florham, as the Devils swept the Garnet 3-0.
Pezzola led the way for the Garnet with nine kills and six digs, while freshman MaggieDuszyk also added eight kills. Reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week Kat Montemurro finished the game with nine kills and two digs and sophomore Allie Coleman contributed with 29 assists, four digs and one ace.
Game 2
Stevens 3, Swarthmore 1 (25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 18-25)
The Garnet took the first game from the host Ducks, but Stevens rallied to take the next three en route to the 3-1 win.
All-Tournament selection Sullivan led the way with 11 digs and nine kills while fellow all-tournament member Pezzola added 14 digs and four kills.
Montemurro finished with match eight kills and one dig, while senior captain Sarah Lambert had two aces. Coleman dished out 20 assists along with two kills and five digs.
Swarthmore opens Centennial Conference play this Wednesday with a trip to Johns Hopkins. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
