Garnet Field Hockey Delivers in the Clutch, Defeats Richard Stockton 2-1 in Penalty Strokes
POMONA, N.J. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team finished 4-for-4 in penalty strokes following two scoreless overtime periods, as the Garnet (2-0) prevailed over homestanding Richard Stockton 2-1 (2 OT) on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Catie Meador, sophomore Julia Tallarico , senior Devon Novotnak and finally senior Sophia Ferguson all converted their penalty strokes following the second overtime period while the Osprey could only connect on 1-of-4, leaving the Garnet with the thrilling victory.
With the win, Swarthmore is 2-0 for the first time since 2006.
Colonnese tied the game for the Garnet with her goal in the second half.
The game was scoreless into the second half until Stockton's Nancy White scored in the 40th minute to give the Osprey a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the period. But the Garnet had the answer, as sophomore Tayrn Colonnese beat the goalie for her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie.
After Colonnese's goal, the teams played scoreless hockey for the next 48 minutes including two overtimes, finally ending after the Garnet finished perfect on strokes.
Senior Katie Ashmore was outstanding in net for the Garnet, recording seven saves in 100 minutes of action.
The Garnet victory spoiled the opening of a new synthetic turf field on the Richard Stockton campus.
Swarthmore will look to make it 3-0 on Saturday when it travels to Widener for a 320 Challenge game. Action is slated to begin at noon.
