Pride Outlast Garnet Women in Double-Overtime, 1-0

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Widener's Brittany Harvis scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute of play as the visiting Pride dealt the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (1-2) a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in double overtime on Tuesday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Colombo had two shots on goal for the Garnet.

With the seconds ticking down in the marathon overtime affair, Harvis was set-up for the game-winning goal thanks to an excellent assist from teammate Devan Doyle in the midfield. Doyle got the ball over the head of a Garnet defender and towards the left of the Swarthmore box. With the ball at her feet and only goalkeeper Marie Mutryn to beat,  Harvis flicked the ball over Mutryn's head and into the back of the net to give Widener (2-1) the victory.

The loss is the second-straight tough defeat for the Garnet, who lost to Lebanon Valley 1-0 on a penalty kick in its last outing. And just like in the Lebanon Valley game, the Garnet out-shot the opponent (9-3 in shots on goal) but were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.

In the net for Garnet, Mutryn anchored an excellent defensive effort, making three saves. Widener goalkeeper Vanessa Hejnas finished with nine saves - including several acrobatic grabs to keep the Pride in the game.

For Swarthmore, senior Megan Colombo, junior Hannah Deming and freshman Megan Brock each finished with two shots on goal.

The Garnet return to action on Saturday with a trip to Dickinson to begin Centennial Conference play. Action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
