Garnet Volleyball Capture Greyhound Premiere Championship with 3-1 Win Over Moravian
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a tough 3-2 loss to Richard Stockton (3-1) to open championship bracket play Saturday morning, the Swarthmore Volleyball team (3-1) rebounded to take down host Moravian (3-1) in a four set battle. The 3-1 victory earned the Garnet its second Greyhound Premiere championship.
Junior Lisa Shang was named the tournament's most valuable player while junior Genny Pezzola was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight year.
Shang's spectacular defensive play led Swat to victory (25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23) over the Greyhounds. Shang would post 22 digs in the match.
Pezzola had nine digs of her own while freshman Danielle Sullivan picked up eight digs of her own.
On offense, Pezzola was back to her old tricks with 15 kills in the match. Sophomore Allie Coleman laid up 36 assists to support the Garnet attack.
Sullivan dropped two services aces and 13 kills.
Earlier in the day Swarthmore took a tough loss to Richard Stockton in five sets (22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9).
Despite the loss, Swat had a great game with Shang adding 17 digs to her total. Pezzola would add 12 and Sullivan 10.
Coleman led the Garnet offense with 41 assists while Pezzola and sophomore Kathryn Montemurro would back her up with 15 kills apiece.
Senior Sarah Lambert would have a great offensive match with three service aces.
The Garnet Volleyball team is back in action on Tuesday September 7 for its home opener against the Widener Pride. Play is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
