Ferguson Leads Garnet Field Hockey to Decisive 5-0 Victory in Season Opener

SWARTHMORE, PA - Senior Sophia Ferguson scored three times and recorded an assist while sophomores Taryn Colonnese and Sophia Agathis each added a goal as the Swarthmore Garnet field hockey (1-0) team defeated the Immaculata Mighty Macs (0-2) 5-0 in their first game of the season on Saturday morning at Clothier Field.

Ferguson led the Garnet offense with three goals.

The scoring opened in the eighteenth minute with Ferguson’s first goal, assisted by sophomore Katie Teleky.   It didn’t take long after that for Ferguson to make it a 2-0 game, adding another goal four minutes later (22:26), this one assisted by Agathis.

Swarthmore never gave Immaculata a chance to get back in the game, outshooting the Mighty Macs 30-5 overall and adding three more goals in the second half.  Agathis scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute to increase the Garnet lead to 3-0.  Ferguson added her third goal of the day in the second half, and also assisted Colonnese to her first goal of the season.

Senior Katie Ashmore and freshman Gabriella Capone split time in goal for the Garnet, facing a total of five shots while Ashmore recorded one save.

Saturday’s victory was the Swarthmore field hockey’s fifth straight opening day win.  The Garnet hopes to keep the ball rolling as they visit Richard Stockton on Wednesday.  Play begins as 4:30 p.m.
