Volleyball Opens Season With 3-0 Victories Over Wilkes, Alvernia
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team wasted no time getting off to a fast start in 2010, as the Garnet earned 3-0 victories against Wilkes and Alvernia during the opening day of the Moravian Greyhound Premiere on Friday evening.
With the victories, the Garnet (2-0) move to the Championships bracket and will face Richard Stockton (12:00) and host Moravian (2:00) tomorrow afternoon.
In the season-opener against Wilkes, the Garnet used a balanced attack and an instant impact from a trio of freshmen to sweep the Colonels (25-16, 25-18, 25-10).
Junior Genny Pezzola finished with seven kills while fellow junior Lisa Shang added seven digs. Sophomore Allie Coleman dished out 21 assists. Freshmen Danielle Sullivan had a fine collegiate debut, recording five kills, five digs and five aces. In all, the three Garnet freshmen combined for 16 kills in the game.
As a team against Wilkes, Swat finished with a .309 hitting percentage and 14 aces.
Against the Crusaders, the Garnet again used a balanced attack to record the sweep (25-13, 25-15, 25-21). Pezzola recorded nine kills and four digs while Coleman finished with six kills and 15 assists.
Senior captain Sarah Lambert had three aces and a game-high six digs, while freshman Brone Lobichusky added four blocks and six kills.
