Garnet Women Open 2010 Season With Convincing 4-0 Victory Over Baptist Bible

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Senior Kirsten Peterson, senior Hannah Purkey, junior Hannah Deming and freshman Lisa Patusky all found the back of the net as the Swarthmore College women’s soccer team (1-0) opened the 2010 season with a convincing 4-0 victory over Baptist Bible in the first game of the 15th Annual Swat Kick Classic from Clothier Field Stadium on Friday evening.

Senior Hannah Purkey scored the Garnet's final goal in the 67th minute.

With the victory, Swarthmore continued its domination of the Swat Kick Classic; the win over the Defenders (1-1) is the Garnet’s ninth consecutive in the Swat Kick Classic, a streak dating back to 2005.

Peterson got it started for the potent Swarthmore offense in the ninth minute, as she took a pass deep inside box, dribbled left past a defender and fired the ball past the diving Baptist Bible goalkeeper, giving Swarthmore the early 1-0 lead, bringing the large crowd on hand for Youth Soccer Day to its feet.

The Garnet offense would pepper the Baptist Bible defense for the rest of the half – amassing a staggering 20 shots in the first half – but wouldn’t score again until the 42nd minute. Set up perfectly by a crisp pass from the front of the net by newcomer Patusky, Deming hammered home the Garnet’s second goal of the half from the left corner, giving Swat the 2-0 lead at the half.

Ahead 2-0 entering the second half, Swarthmore put it away with goals in the 53rd and 67th minutes. Patusky scored the first goal of her career on a breakaway set up by a midfield pass from fellow freshman Amber Famigilietti. With only one defender to beat, Patusky juked around both the defender and the goalkeeper, tapping the ball into the corner of the net to put Swat firmly ahead at 3-0

Purkey added the final dagger of the game 13 minutes later, netting an unassisted goal to bring the game to the 4-0 final.

The Garnet overwhelmed the Defenders from the opening whistle, owning a 20-1 advantage in shots-on-goal and 48-3 edge in shots.

For Baptist Bible, goalkeepers Cierra Byron and Karin Mowry combined for 16 saves while facing constant pressure. Junior Marie Mutryn made one save for Swarthmore.

The Garnet returns to action Saturday night against Lebanon Valley in the final game of the Swat Kick Classic.
