Volleyball Tied for Third in Centennial Conference Preseason Poll; Receive First-Place Vote
LANCASTER, Pa. -The Swarthmore College volleyball team was picked third in the 2010 Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, the conference announced on Friday afternoon.
The Garnet tied Gettysburg for third place while picking up a first-place vote.
The Garnet, coming off its first ever playoff victory and ECAC playoff appearance last season , return all-Conference performers Genny Pezzola and Kat Montemurro, as well as experienced players Sarah Lambert, Allie Coleman, Lisa Shang and Hillary Santana.
Franklin & Marshall is the coaches' preseason favorite to win the Centennial title. The Diplomats earned the top spot with 98 points and eight first-place votes (voters not permitted to vote for their own team). Second-place goes to defending champion Haverford with 87 points and a first-place vote. Gettysburg tied Swarthmore tied for third-place on the poll with 80 points apiece while both teams nabbed a first-place vote. McDaniel (64) and Johns Hopkins (57) round out the top six.
Last season, the Garnet were picked ninth in the preseason poll before surprising the entire conference with its fourth-place finish and appearance in the conference semifinals.
Swarthmore opens the 2010 season at the Moravian Greyhound Premiere on Friday, September 3.
