Ursinus Downs Garnet Baseball 7-0 in Rain-Shortened Game

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Ursinus starting pitcher Corey Weaver limited the Swarthmore College baseball team (16-12, 8-6) to no runs and just one hit over five innings, as the Bears got past the Garnet 7-0 in a five-inning game shortened by rain on Friday evening.

Archibald had the Garnet's lone hit on the day.

Senior Wiley Archibald's double in the fifth inning was the lone hit of the game for the Garnet, who fall into a tie for third place in the Conference, as the Garnet battle for the program's first Centennial Conference playoff berth.

The Bears jumped on the Garnet early and never looked back, scoring three runs in the first inning off of Swat starting pitcher freshman Ramsey Walker (2-1). Three of the Bears' first four batters reached via singles, bringing home the first two runs of the game, while the big hit for Ursinus' Rich Guthridge, as he doubled home the third run, giving the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Ursinus then padded the lead, scoring two runs in both the third and fifth innings. In the third, Ursinus' Tommy Clarke scored on a bases loaded walk, while another runner would score on a Swat error by relief pitcher James Bernard.

Ursinus put two more on in the fifth as Ben Gresh doubled home two runs, making it a 7-0 game.

Walker took the loss for the Garnet, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with three Ks in 2.2 innings of work. Junior Adam Koshkin struck out two batters in two innings of relief.

Swarthmore hosts Franklin & Marshall in a crucial doubleheader from Clothier Field on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12:30 p.m.
