No. 13 Johns Hopkins Hands Garnet Women First Centennial Loss, 8-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Rachel Wallwork won her 23rd consecutive Centennial Conference singles match - besting Johns Hopkins'  Carolyn Warren 6-2, 6-2 - but it wasn't enough to help the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (8-4, 6-1) overtake the mighty Blue Jays, as  No. 13 Hopkins prevailed 8-1 on Tuesday evening from the Mullan Center.

The loss is the Garnet's first Centennial Conference loss of the 2010 season.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping double play.  At No. 1 doubles, the Swat No. 1 doubles pair of Wallwork and freshman Emily Rosenblum fought an epic battle against Hopkins'  regionally ranked pair of Warren and Anita Bhamidiapti, but fell in the third tiebreaker 9-8 (3).

In singles play, JHU opened with a victory, as No 2 Nandita Krishnan defeated Swarthmore sophomore Rosie DuBrin 6-2, 6-0 to give the Blue Jays a commanding 4-0 lead. Wallwork's victory cut the margin to 4-1, but Hopkins sealed it at No. 3 singles, as Bhamidiapti defeated Rosenblum 6-4, 6-3.

The singles losses from Rosenblum and freshman Kelsey Johnson were their first Centennial Conference defeats of the season.

Swarthmore looks to get back on track this weekend with a trip to Dickinson. Action is slated for 1:00 p.m.
