Jensen Leads Swat Past Haverford, 7-4

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Dylan Jensen threw eight strong innings to lead the Swarthmore College baseball team (13-11, 5-5 CC) to a 7-4 Conference victory over the Haverford Fords (16-9, 7-3 CC) on a windy afternoon at Clothier Field.

Jensen fanned seven batters while walking one and giving up only three earned runs to pick up his third win of the season.  Jensen is now 3-2 on the mound. 

Jensen went eight innings and had seven strikeouts to pick up his third win of the season.

Swarthmore plated two runs in the first innings thanks to two Haverford errors and hits from sophomore Mike Waterhouse and and senior Wiley Archibald.  After junior Thomas Nakamura would reach on error by the Ford's center fielder Waterhouse would move him up to second on a single to right center.  Nakamura would steal third base to set up sophomore Anthony Montalbano with sacrifice fly opportunity.

Haverford would score a run and putting runners on first and second with one out in the second but sophomore third baseman Spencer Ross would end the threat with a line drive double play.

The Garnet would put the game out of reach for the Fords in the fourth inning with three runs off of three hits.  Archibald hit a leadoff double down the right field line before sophomore Miles Santo would drive him in on the next at bat with a single to center.  After Ross would walk and senior Jimmy Gill would move the runners up on a sacrifice bunt, Nakamura would drive in both runner with a shot through the left side of the field.

Errors doomed the Fords again in the sixth inning when junior Ben Schneiderman would make it to third on a throwing error by the pitcher, scoring Gill.  Schneiderman would then score on  a single off the bat of sophomore Mike Cameron.

Near perfect defensive play by Swat made it almost  impossible for Haverford put runners on base.  The Fords would plate runners in the fourth and sixth innings but couldn't put together a rally.

The Fords' final attempt at a comeback came in the ninth after Jeff Butera would hit a double off the center field fence and score off of a single two batters later.  Sophomore closer Ignacio Rodriguez quickly put an end to the Haverford threat striking out Alex Hudak to end the game.

Archibald went two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored for the Garnet.

Haverford pitcher Bryan Henrick took the loss to move to 2-2.

The Swarthmore baseball team returns to the diamond on Saturday April 10 as they travel to Gettysburg for an afternoon doubleheader.  Play is set to being at 12:30 PM.
