TCNJ Topples Garnet Tennis in 5-4 Battle

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - TCNJ's Steven Fernandez defeated Swarthmore sophomore Steven Youngblood 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the decisive No. 1 singles match as the Lions outlasted the Swarthmore College men's tennis team 5-4 on Saturday afternoon from the College Avenue Courts.

Wee picked up a victory in No. 3 singles.

Youngblood took the first set 6-4, but saw Fernandez take the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 in a fierncly contested battle to give the Lions the edge over the Garnet (1-4)

Youngblood, along with sophomore Zak Kelm, got it started for Swat with a dominant 8-1 win in No. 1 doubles over the TCNJ brother tandem of Steven and Stewart Fernandez. But Lions would record victories in No. 2 and No.3 singles, taking a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

No. 2 Kelm, No.3 Mark Wee and No. 4 Max Bressman eanred wins for the Garnet in singles play, with Kelm handling TCNJ's Stewart Fernandez (6-3, 6-3), Wee topping Dean Thompson 7-6,  and Bressman defeating Jonathan Yu 6-4, 6-3, but it wasn't enough for the Garnet. The Lions got victoires in No. 5 and No.6 singles -  along with the No.1 win - to pull off the narrow victory.

Swarthmore welcomes No. 13 Kalamazoo to the College on Tuesday.
