Garnet Fall to Shorewomen for First Loss of the Season, 17-4

BOX SCORE

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – It was all Washington in the Centennial Conference opener, as the Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team (3-1, 0-1) lost to the Shorewomen, 17-4, to suffer its first defeat of the 2010 season.

Williams netted a goal for the Garnet in the Centennial opener.

Washington opened the contest with a quick strike of scores, three goals in two minutes and didn’t look back.

After a goal by sophomore Annelise Mowry at the 22:36 mark, continuing her hot start, Swarthmore was unable to keep the momentum as Washington unleashed yet another blast of 3 goals. This time it was freshman Mollie Shipley with a hat trick in the span of 2:30, she would finish with 4 goals on the day. Shipley led a balanced Washington attack that featured 8 different scorers.

The first half flurries were a part of a dominant opening for the Shorewomen where Swarthmore was outshot 22-10 and outscored 13-1.

Swarthmore played about even with Washington in the second half, but trading goals wasn’t enough to overcome the half time deficit. Mowry added her second goal, and sophomore Maddie Williams, Junior Amy Vachal, and sophomore Phoebe Hansen found the net.

The Garnet are in action again  Tuesday, March 23 at Immaculata.
