Garnet Dive Into Day One of Centennial Championships; Benveniste Takes Third in 500 Freestyle
LANCASTER, Pa. - A strong start for Swarthmore College men's swim team and the performance of freshman Jacob Benveniste highlighted the first day of the Centennial Conference Championships for the Garnet swim teams on Friday evening from Franklin & Marshall.
The Garnet men find themselves in second place with 207 points - trailing only the first place Diplomats (258) after the first day of competition. Benveniste was the lone Garnet swimmer to capture a top-three finish, clocking in at 4:44.56 in the 500-yard freestyle. Benveniste's time ranks in the top five 500 free times in Swarthmore College history.
The Garnet women got off to a slow start on day one, not placing any top three finishers to start day one of competition. Swarthmore holds the number six spot in the team competition with 96 points. Gettysburg leads the women's competition with 196 points.
Benveniste and freshman Tyler Hanson paced the Garnet in the 500 free going three-four in the race. Hanson touched the wall in 4:45.63.
Sophomore Tim Brevart also recorded a Swarthmore College record time in the 50-yard freestyle prelims, clocking in at 21.86 to claim a fourth all-time best time. Brevart finished fifth in the finals of the 50-yard freestlye with a time of 21.86
The men's relay teams also had a strong showing with fourth place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. The 200-yard free relay team of junior Santiago Lombo, senior Michael Ahn, sophomore Neil Palmer and Brevart finished with a time of 1:27.52.
Freshman Roger Chin, Junior Sterling Satterfield, freshman Daniel Duncan and Palmer
ended the men's first day of competition with its fourth place finish (3:36.06) in the 400-yard medley relay.
In the 200 IM, Satterfield (2.00.54, Duncan (2:00.63) and Fuoco (2:01.73) finished 5-6-7.
Fantastic depth was the key to men's 207 points on the first day of competition: 10 different swimmers earned finals' points in three events to bolster the Garnet men.
On the women's side, the 200-yard freestyle relay team made up of junior Chelsea Brett, sophomore Rosalie Lawrence, sophomore Naomi Glassman and senior Claire Shelden paced the Garnet women with a fifth place finish.
Senior Anne Miller and sophomore Rosalie Lawrence led the way for the Garnet. Miller recorded a fourth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle touching the wall in 5:08.95 - missing second place by tenths of a second. In the 200-yard IM, Lawrence posted a time of 2:16.70 for a fourth place finish.
The Garnet will be back in action for day two of competition on Saturday February 20. The first session is set to begin at 11 AM, with finals starting at 7:00 p.m.
