Big Day for Garnet Women in Gotham City Cup
NEW YORK - Sophomore Kenyetta Givans, sophomore Ogechi Irondi and senior Lauren DeLuca all earned Top 10 finishes, while the relay team almost put up a Centennial-best time as the Swarthmore College women's indoor track team opened the semester with the Gotham City Cup at the New York Armory on Friday afternoon.Givans - who tied her own Swarthmore College school record in the 55 meter hurdles (8.58 seconds) in her last competition - was impressive in her first competition in nearly a month, finishing ninth in the 60m hurdles with a collegiate-best time of 9.20 seconds, just shy of provisionally qualifying for the DIII NCAA National meet by 0.03 seconds.
Irondi earned a spot on the Swarthmore All-Time Top 10 list in the shotput with a toss of 32’2.75” - good for a seventh-place overall finish in the unseeded competition.
In the 4x400 relay, the team of DeLuca, sophomore Margret Lenfest, Givans and freshman Rebecca Hammond finished in a time of 4:17.80, winning their heat and good for third in the Conference this season.
DeLuca finished the women's 1,000 meter run in a time of 3:09.22 - good for 10th place. She was followed by Lenfest, who came in 20th with a time of 3:15.88.
Freshman Hana Lehmann made a quite a debut for 2010, also finding herself in tenth on the Garnet's All-Time Top 10 in the triple-jump with a leap of 30’11” - good for 18th in the unseeded meet competition and eighth in the Centennial Conference for the season.
The Garnet return to action on Saturday, January 30, with a trip to nearby Haverford College for the McElligott Invitational.
