Widener Rallies To Defeat Garnet Women 55-48 in 320 Battle
CHESTER, Pa. - Swarthmore's one-two punch of junior Kathryn Stockbower and junior Ceylan Bodur each scored 11 points, but on a blistery cold evening in Chester, the Garnet offense went ice cold at the wrong time, scoring just nine points in the game's final 12 minutes to allow Widener to rally from a double-digit deficit in the second half to come back for the 55-48 victory on Thursday evening.
Widener's Cathy Pritz led all scorers with 26 points, as the Pride (6-3) rallied from down 11 points with a little over 12 minutes left in the game, putting the clamps on the Garnet offense and securing the hard-fought win.
Stockbower tied a season-high with 13 rebounds and the Garnet (2-6, 1-3) hit five three-pointers, but Swat was once again done in by poor free-throw shooting (5-14) and an inability to hang on to the basketball (24 turnovers).
With less than nine minutes left in the game the Garnet had put together an eight point lead but in the next five minutes the Pride would put together a 12-0 run to go up by four with less than five minutes left.
After the lead change, Swarthmore was only kept in the game by Bodur,as she dropped a three and a free throw to end the game but the Garnet couldn't catch up as they fell in another come-from-behind loss.
With the Pride's in, the 320 Challenge is now tied 5-5 heading into the spring semester.
Stockbower now has 49 double-doubles for her career.
Freshman Eliza Polli finished with a career-high seven points, while fellow freshman Madeline Ross chipped in with six points and six rebounds.
Swarthmore will look to change its momentum after a long break when it travels to the Catholic University on January 3rd and 4th.
