Stockbower Scores 1,000, But Garnet Fall to Late-Charging Ursinus 64-59

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Kathryn Stockbower became the seventh player in Swarthmore College women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points, scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, but visiting Ursinus rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Garnet 64-59 on Saturday afternoon from Tarble Pavilion.

Down six midway through the first half, the Garnet (2-4, 1-3) went on a 15-0 run led by a pair of threes from sophomore Genny Pezzola, to take a nine point lead over the Bears.  Pezzola drained another three in the second half and finished with 15 points.

Only :38 seconds after Pezzola netted her second three, Stockbower drew a foul to put on the line for the chance at her 999th and 1000th career points.  The crowd readied as she netted the first and was getting ready to take the second shot.  You could hear a pin drop in Tarble Pavilion as her second free-throw was on its way, it was good and the crowd jumped its feet chanting and holding up signs reading "K. Stockbower 1000 points."

The Garnet kept the momentum going for the rest of the first half to carry a 10 point into the locker room.

In the second half the Bears (4-2, 2-2) came out surging to go on a 21-6 run and recapture its first lead, 46-44, since the 10th minute in the first half.  The Ursinus offense was led by Carolyn Konstanzer who put up 17 points and seven rebounds before fouling out late in the game, leaving her only four points from 1000 career points.

After the Ursinus run, a series of missed layups by the Garnet and offensive rebounds by the Bears completely changed the tempo of the game in Ursinus' favor.  The momentum shift put the Garnet in a hole they couldn't get out of that led to the eventual 64-59, come from behind win for the Bears.

Junior Ceylan Bodur scored 11 points in the game for her second straight double-digit game.

Stockbower and the Garnet will return to action on Wednesday December 9th when they travel to Maryland to face off against Washington College.  Play is slated to begin at 6 PM.
