Stockbower/Bodur Combo Strong Again, But Garnet Fall to Johns Hopkins 76-65
BALTIMORE - Swarthmore's one-two punch of junior Kathryn Stockbower and senior Ceylan Bodur combined for 46 of the Garnet's 65 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a balanced Johns Hopkins' attack that saw four different players reach double figures, as the homestanding Blue Jays defeated the Garnet 76-65 in Centennial Conference women's basketball action on Thursday night.
Stockbower finished with 21 points - leaving her just 11 points shy of becoming just the seventh player in program history to reach 1,000 career points - while pulling down 13 rebounds. Bodur scored a game-high 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
Chantel Mattiola led the way for the Blue Jays (4-2, 2-1 ) with an outstanding overall performance, scoring 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from behind the arc, while adding a game-high five steals and four assists. Anastasia Wynn (12), Lyndsay Burton (11) and Monica Mitchell (10) also hit double-digits for Hopkins.
The teams played even basketball for the first 17 minutes of play, with the Garnet (2-3, 1-2) buoyed by outstanding offensive performances from Bodur and Stockbower. With the Blue Jays leading 31-28 with just over three minutes remaining in the half, Hopkins used a lightning-quick 8-2 run to create separation from the Garnet. A lay-up from Hopkins' Alex Vasssila made it a 39-30 game with 1:34 to go before the break. A pair of baskets from Bodur got the lead down to 39-34 with :54 seconds remaining, but JHU's Nia Josiah answered with a jumper with :08 seconds left, giving the Blue Jays a 41-34 halftime lead.
For the half, Bodur and Stockbower combined to score 32 of the Garnet's 34 points.
The Garnet kept the game close throughout the second half, but could never quite muster enough of a run to take back the lead. A three-pointer from senior Pam Costello - who scored all nine of her points in the second half - with 8:10 remaining made it 61-50 Hopkins and gave the Garnet hope of a comeback. But on the next possession, JHU's Wynn scored on driving lay-up, killing the Garnet momentum and ending any thoughts of a comeback.
The Blue Jays finished with 16-8 edge in points off the bench while each team finished with 39 rebounds.
The Garnet returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Ursinus at 1:00 p.m. Fans can catch the game and Stockbower's pursuit of 1,000 points via the Garnet Sports Network live video.
