Six Garnet Women Named to All-Centennial Team
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore women's soccer team had six student-athletes named to the All-Centennial team, as announced Tuesday. Junior Megan Colombo and senior Julia Luongo were named to the first team, while junior Laura Bolger and freshman Alexa Ross were selected to the second team and senior Maggie DeLorme and sophomore Marie Mutryn were honorable mention.
Colombo (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia), a forward, was voted to the first team by the Conference head coaches. This is the now the third straight year that Colombo has been named to the All-Centennial team. She was named to the first team in 2007 and second team in 2008. Colombo anchored the 2009 Garnet offense with a team leading six goals and 15 points.
Luongo (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon), a midfielder, makes the team for the first time. Luongo made the best of her senior season and played an important role in the Garnet's 13-4-1 record netting five goals and playing in every game this season. Luongo led the team in shots on goal (30) and shots on goal percentage (.750).
Bolger (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields), a defender, joins the All-Centennial team for her second year; Bolger was selected to the honorable mention in 2008. Bolger carried the Garnet defense to eight shutouts this season and held its opponents to only 14 total goals, third in the conference.
Ross (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East), a midfielder, is the only Garnet freshman to be named to the All-Centennial team. Ross made her presence felt in her debut collegiate season, playing in every game this season. Ross helped catapult the Swarthmore offense into the Centennial Conference playoffs.
DeLorme (Lusby, MD - Patuxent), a defender, makes the team for her third time ('07, '08). DeLorme teamed up with Bolger in the backfield to thwart opponent attacks to allow only .76 goals per game - third in the conference.
Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y./Niskayuna), goal keeper, also makes the team for the first time. After learning from her predecessor Lauren Walker in 2008, Mutryn proved herself this season. Mutryn posted eight shutouts and racked up 85 saves. Mutryn started in every game for Swarthmore and played more minutes than anyone on the team (1469).
The Garnet were selected to play in the ECAC Championships this week. The No. 3 seed Swarthmore will host No. 6 Centenary (N.J) on Wednesday November 4th at 7:00 PM.
