Four Garnet Named to All-Centennial Team

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore men's soccer team had four student-athletes named to the All-Centennial team, as announced Monday.  Junior Morgan Langley and sophomore Micah Rose were named to the first team, while sophomore Brett McLarney was selected to the second team and junior Gage Newman was honorable mention.

msoc09_mlangleyLangley (Honolulu, HI/Iolani School), a forward, was voted to the first team by the Conference head coaches.  This is the second time he has been honored by the Conference; Langley was an honorable mention selection in 2008.  The junior anchored the explosive Garnet offense that led the Centennial Conference in every offensive statistic which includes shots (304), goals (44), goals per game (2.59), points (123), assists (35) and assists per game (2.06).  Langley accounted for 13 of the Garnet’s goals which is the second most in the Conference.  Langley also led the conference in shots (75) and shots per game (4.69), points (28) and points per game (1.75) and goal per game (0.81).

Rose (Williston, VT / Champlain Valley Union), a midfielder, makes the team for the first time. Rose played a pivotal part of the Garnet midfield, being named to the Conference Offensive Honor Roll on October 12 after posting the game-winning goal against Ursinus.  Rose was also named to the 2009 Conference Academic Honor Roll.

msoc09_McLarneyMcLarney (Lowell, MA/St. John’s Prep), a defender, acted as the keystone in the Garnet’s sturdy defense that led the Conference in goals allowed (10), goals against average (0.59) and shutouts (10). The Conference named McLarney Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 19 as he anchored a Garnet backline that shut out St. Mary's College and Franklin & Marshall.  McLarney was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II first-team as voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). McLarney was also named to the 2009 Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Newman, (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham, Browne & Nichols), a defender, teamed up with McLarney to lead the Garnet backfield its 14-2-2 record.  Newman was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on September 13 after leading the Garnet defense to a 1-0 shutout over then No. 2 Steven’s Tech.  Newman joined teammates Rose and McLarney on the 2009 Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Swarthmore concluded the regular season with a 14-2-2 record overall, including an 6-1-2 mark in the Centennial to earn the second seed in the Conference Championships.

The Garnet men received an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship and will host first and second round matches on November 14-15 at Clothier field.  Swarthmore will play Merchant Marine Academy (15-3), an at-large bid recipient from the Landmark College, at 7:30 p.m.
