McLarney, D Annunzio Named Academic All-District by ESPN the Magazine

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore College men's soccer players Brett McLarney '12 and David D'Annunzio '12 were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II Team as voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced recently. McLarney is a first-team selection while D'Annunzio earned third-team status.

The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II and Division III, and NAIA, colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his or her team.

msoc09_McLarneyMcLarney (Lowell, Mass./St. John's Prep) makes the team in his first year of eligibility. A chemistry major, McLarney is one of the top defenders for the No.6/12 men's soccer team. With McLarney anchoring the backline, the Garnet have conceded just 10 goals for the season while posting 10 shutouts.

McLarney will now move onto the national ballot, to be announced in two weeks.

msco09_d'annunzio D'Annunzio (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) also makes the team in his first year of eligibility. An engineering major, D'Annunzio leads the Garnet with 31 saves and four shutouts while posting an 8-1 record with a  .838 save percentage in net. In 2008, D'Annunzio finished the season with a .55 goals-against average and nine shutouts, both of which rank in the program's top ten all-times records.

Swarthmore returns to action Saturday, November 7, when the Garnet begin defense of its Centennial Conference title against Johns Hopkins from Muhlenberg College in Allentown.  Kickoff times will be announced Monday, November 2nd.
