Second-Half Goals Propel No. 23 Garnet to 3-1 Victory at Gettysburg
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 23 Swarthmore College women's soccer team (12-3, 6-2) scored two goals within a two-minute span in the second half as the Garnet defeated Gettysburg College 3-1 on a rainy Saturday afternoon from the Battlefield.
Sophomore Hannah Deming scored late in the first half to give Swat the lead heading into the half, while juniors Hannah Purkey and Liz Mills scored in the the 61st and 63rd minutes respectively, breaking a 1-1 tie and giving the Garnet a crucial road victory to solidify its spot in the upper-echelon of the Centennial Conference.
Gettysburg came back after half fired up after being down 1-0 going into the half. The Bullets' Kerry McKenna tied up the game off of a corner kick only five minutes into the second half.
From that point on the Garnet controlled the pace of the game pelting Gettysburg's keeper with eight of its 18 shots in the second half. Two of those shots for back-to-back goals. Purkey with the go-ahead and Mills putting the nail in the coffin to make it 3-1.
Swarthmore keeper, sophomore Marie Mutryn, allowed only one goal and had three saves in the game. The Garnet defense held the Bullets to nine shots.
Swarthmore hits the pitch again on Tuesday October 27th as they travel to Haverford College. Play begins at 4 PM.
