No. 6 Garnet Tie McDaniel 1-1 in Rain-Shortened Game

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The No. 6 Swarthmore College men's soccer team scored on an own goal by McDaniel's Max Rutherford in the 55th  minute, as the Garnet (13-1-1, 5-1-1) earned a 1-1 tie with homestanding McDaniel in a game that was called with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation because of heavy rain and unplayable field conditions.

Weimar made two saves for the Garnet.

It's hard enough winning on the road in the Centennial Conference, and it's even harder to do when the home team is playing for its playoff life and the home field resembles a swamp.

The Green Terror jumped on the Garnet from the get-go, with Michael Beard coming off the bench for McDaniel and scoring and unassisted goal.

The game would remain 1-0 through the half in favor of the Green Terror, until Swat caught a break in the miserable weather to even the game. In the 55th minute, a header from McDaniel's Max Rutherford got past goalkeeper Robert Hollasch for an own goal, helping the Garnet equalize the game 1-1.

From there, the field conditions continued to deteriorate from the heavy rain. In the 78th minute, officials determined that the field conditions were unplayable, and the game was called.

In goal for the Garnet, junior captain Zach Weimar made two saves, while McDaniel's Hollasch finished with three saves.
Swarthmore finished with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks and 10-6 in shots.

The Garnet will close out the regular-season home campaign when it hosts Muhlenberg on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The game will honor seniors Omari Faakye and Dylan Langley.
