Garnet Volleyball Digs for the Cure, Defeats Ursinus 3-0 for Fifth-Straight Win
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Genny Pezzola had 13 kills and freshman Allie Coleman had 22 assists as the Garnet (18-6, 6-1 CC) took down Conference foe Ursinus (8-13, 2-6 CC) in straight sets 3-0 Wednesday night in Tarble Pavilion.
Swarthmore went into Wednesday night's game on a four game winning streak and looked to make it five against the visiting Ursinus Bears. The Garnet started out taking set one without much resistance winning 25-15. Set two was a almost a mirror image with Swarthmore winning it 25-14 and posting 14 kills in the set.
The Bears put up some obstacles in game three with several long volleys and 10 kills to keep it close. The game was all tied up at 15 until the Garnet made their move posting three straight points to start their rally. After that Swarthmore finished strong to win the set 25-19 and make it five straight victories.
Wednesday night's game was also significant in that both teams were participating in the fourth annual "Dig for a Cure" campaign. Each dig that the either team recorded would raise money to be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), a non-profit organization based in Haverford, Pa. The LBBC is dedicated to empowering all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality life. Swarthmore compiled 51 digs and Ursinus racked up 40. Pezzola and freshman Kat Montemurro led the charge with a combined 21 digs.
The Garnet will continue its quest for a Conference playoff birth and sixth straight win when they travel to Conference rival Gettysburg on Saturday October 24. Play will start at 1 PM.
