Colombo Nets Game-Winning Goal as No. 17 Garnet Beat McDaniel 2-1
Westminster, Md. - Junior Megan Colombo netted the game-winning goal in the 80th minute as the No. 17 Swarthmore College women's soccer team (9-2, 3-1) went on the road and defeated McDaniel 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Colombo's late goal came after McDaniel had tied the game with a goal by Jessica Peyton in the 77th minute. But Colombo and Garnet were undaunted with the late tie on the road, scoring just three minutes later when Colombo's shot hit both a McDaniel defender and goalkeeper before finding the back of the net.
With the victory, the Garnet improve to 3-1 in the Centennial Conference and 3-0 in road games this season.
Swarthmore dominated the tempo of the game - evident from the 23-8 edge in shots and 13-3 advantage in shots on goal - but just as expected in the conference road opener, nothing came easy for the Garnet.
The Garnet attack got going late in the first half thanks to the junior combo of Elizabeth Mills and Kirsten Peterson. Mills tapped in an easy goal from the front of the box after being set-up on a beautiful pass from Peterson, giving Swat a 1-0 lead. The goal was Mills' second of the season and Peterson's team-high third assist.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 77th minute when McDaniel's Peyton scored the tying goal on a shot that was mishandled by Swarthmore goalkeeper Marie Mutryn. But Swat wasted no time wallowing in the McDaniel goal, as Colombo registered the game-winner just three minutes later, as the Garnet would hang on for the 2-1 win.
Mutryn made one save in net for Swat, while the rest of the Garnet backline allowed the Green Terror just three shots on goal for the game.
The Garnet will continue its season-high three game road trip when it travels to rival Bryn Mawr on Saturday, October 10. Action is slated to begin at noon.
