Langley Brothers Help Propel Garnet to 4-1 Win Over Catholic University
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Down 1-0 early in the second half, the No. 13 Swarthmore men’s soccer team rallied behind arguably the best set of brothers in Division III soccer. Senior captain Dylan Langley scored two goals – including the equalizer – while junior Morgan Langley netted the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute, as the Garnet rallied to defeat Catholic University 4-1 in the final game of the 12th Annual Garnet Alumni Classic from Clothier Field Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Garnet capture first place in the Classic for the sixth-consecutive year while extending its tournament unbeaten streak to 13 games.
After a relatively uneventful first half where both defenses controlled the tempo, things certainly escalated in a second half that saw five goals, five yellow cards and a red card on Catholic’s starting keeper.
In the 46th minute – a minute which saw yellow cards issued to each side - Catholic’s John Brady secured the ball off a deflected shot and chipped it over Swarthmore goalie Zach Weimar, giving the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. The goal was Brady’s third of the Classic, tops for the tournament.
The Garnet had the equalizer in the 55th minute. A red card on Catholic starting goalie Quinn Daly set up a penalty kick by sophomore David Sterngold. His shot was denied by a driving save from new Catholic goalkeeper Thomas O’Leary, but senior Dylan Langley crashed the net and blasted the rebound into the back of the net, tying the game 1-1.
Down a man for the rest of the match, Catholic had no answer for the speed of the Garnet attack. In the 69th minute, Morgan Langley broke free from the midfield, beat two defenders to his right, juked the Catholic goalie and netted the go-ahead goal, giving the Garnet the 2-1 lead.
Brother Dylan padded the lead five minutes later. He chipped the over the goalie after being set up on the assist by freshman John Pontillo to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Garnet added one last goal for good measure in the final minute of play when freshman Kieran Reichert handled a perfect through pass from sophomore Ayman Abunimer and put in the back of the net, bringing the game to the 4-1 final.
Swarthmore returns to action on Sunday, September 13, when it hosts Stevens Tech from Clothier Field Stadium.
