Mullarkey Named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior Cait Mullarkey was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II cross-country/track & field team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Mullarkey is a first-team selection and will move onto the national ballot.
The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his team.
This is Mullarkey’s second Academic All-District selection of 2008-09; she was named Academic All-America for women’s soccer (third-team) after receiving an All-District First-Team selection this past fall.
Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) earned All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in early March, running fifth in the mile at Rose-Hulman Sports and Recreation Center. The senior had a successful outdoor season as well, qualifying for the national meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 1,500 meters. Mullarkey, due to honors exams, chose to compete in the steeplechase and finished 11th in a time of 10:54.09.
Mullarkey holds four school track records (indoor mile, indoor 5,000, outdoor 3,000 steeplechase and 1,500) and concludes her running career with two gold medals at the Centennial Conference Championships (indoor 800 meters and outdoor 4x800 relay).
Mullarkey, honors biology major, graduated from the College in May, has already received a host of accolades in 2008-09, both in the classroom, and on the field and track. The 30th Swarthmore student to win a coveted Rhodes Scholarship earlier this fall, Mullarkey captained the Swarthmore women’s soccer team to a second consecutive E.C.A.C. South Region Championship after becoming the first defender in Centennial history to make First-Team All-Conference all four years. A three-time All-Region performer on the soccer field, Mullarkey was named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America, Scholar Athlete by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (N.S.C.A.A.) and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Star. She has twice been named Centennial Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, and posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in both the mile and the 5,000 meters during the 2008-09 indoor season.
Mullarkey joins Swarthmore tennis player Rachel Wallwork ’10 on the Academic All-America national ballot, to be announced in two weeks.
