Cox Leaps For Gold
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshman Nicole Cox won the gold medal in the women's high jump at the 2009 Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted at Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday.
Cox (Los Gatos, Calif. / Castillejia School) earned her first Conference championship medal in the women’s high jump. Her leap was a personal-best for the gold medal (1.5-meters).
Freshman Kenyatta Givans (Conshohocken, Pa. / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) was just six hundredths of a second behind Haverford’s Eliza Reiss for the second Championship in a row to earn a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles. Her 15.18 race-time was a personal-best and moved her closer to the Swarthmore program record.
Field specialist Heather Hightower ’09 (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Oakwood Friends) threw a personal-best in the women’s shot put. Her seventh place throw (32’7.75”) marked the eighth best in program history.
In her final Centennial Championship, senior Cait Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) had a personal-best in the women’s 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:42.91 which was good for a fourth place finish and a second-best program history time. She also completed the 800-meter run crossing the line at 2:22.09.
On the men’s side sophomore Chris Mayer-Bacon (Wenonah, N.J. / Gateway Regional) finished fourth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best 56.79 good for the sixth best time in program history.
Freshman Daniel Ly (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) finished fourth in the men’s triple jump leaping to a 12.87-meters.
