Cameron Has Major League Day in Win Over Arcadia
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshman Michael Cameron slugged three home runs to tie a Centennial Conference record as the Garnet defeated Arcadia, 22-11, on a hot Sunday afternoon at Clothier Fields.
Swarthmore took an early lead in the first as freshman Anthony Montablano (Edison, N.J. / John P. Stevens), [pictured left] who went 4-for-6 on the afternoon, was walked but quickly moved to third after stealing second and advancing the additional base off an error by the Knight’s catcher. Garnet right fielder Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. /Henlopen) hit a triple to right field driving in two runs. The score became 4-0 in favor of the home team as freshman short stop Spencer Ross (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) sent a single through the left side to send Gill across the plate. In his second at bat of the inning Montablano drove in catcher Matt Lamb (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Loyola) off a single. The final run of the inning was scored off a single to the short stop from Mike Waterhouse ’12 (Weston, Conn. / Weston).
Arcadia (5-30) posted their first two runs in the second inning off three hits.
In the second, Ross collected his 35th hit of the season with a single up the middle and was sent home off a hit from Lamb. The Garnet scored an additional two runs in the inning extending their lead to eight runs (10-2).
After a lone Knight run in the top of the third Swarthmore posted 10 runs in the bottom of the inning. The inning was highlighted with Cameron (Calabasa, Calif. / View Point) [pictured right] hitting two home runs over the left field wall. The hometown crowd cheered extra loud for his second one as it was a grand slam.
At his fifth trip to the plate Cameron sent a drive over the left field wall for his third homer of the day; the run was the 21st of the game for the Swarthmore. The dinger marked his fifth of the season which is a single season record for the Garnet (single season records recorded since 1982). Four other Conference hitters have slugged three round-trippers, the last coming in 1997 (according to the Centennial web site).
The Knights posted two runs in the seventh to make the score 22-7 following three scoreless at bats.
During the top of the eighth inning, the Knights enjoyed back-to-back home runs, good for three runs. With their four runs Arcadia cut the deficit to 22-11.
In his 10th start of the season, Garnet lefty Andy Allen ’11 (Manchester, Maine / St. Dominic) (4-3) pitched five innings for the win.
The 2009 edition of Swarthmore baseball concluded their season with an overall record of 13-23 and 4-14 in Conference play.
