Rachel Works to the Courts
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore junior Rachel Wallwork won four matches en route to her 17th Centennial Conference No. 1 singles win in a row as the Garnet fell to both Johns Hopkins (7-2) and Dickinson (7-2) on Saturday.
In the first match of the afternoon the defending Centennial Conference Champions #9 Johns Hopkins defeated the Garnet 7-2. The Blue Jays improved to a 8-3 overall and 7-0 Conference record while Swarthmore fell to 4-7, 3-3 CC.
Regionally ranked #13 Wallwork (Washington, D.C. / Georgetown Day) upset #4 Carolyn Warren with a pair of 6-3 scores in number one singles. The match ended Warren’s four match win streak while Wallwork extended her Centennial run to 16 in a row.
#5 Doubles pair Jennie Park ’09 (Rockford, Ill. / Guilford) and Wallwork defeated #9 Brittany Matava and Warren with a score on 8-4 in the No. 1 slot.
Swarthmore closed the afternoon falling to Dickinson 7-2, the Red Devils improved to a 9-7 overall and 3-5 in Conference play.
Wallwork pushed her Centennial win streak to 17 in a row as she defeated Joelle Nitzberg with 6-1 and 6-0 scores.
The Garnet No. 1 doubles duo Park and Wallwork earned their eighth win of the season with a score of 8-1.
Swarthmore will take tomorrow off but return to the tennis courts on Monday, April 20th to host McDaniel. The Centennial Conference contest is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
