Garnet Rock On
WILMINGTON, Del. -- The Swarthmore golf team ignored some early rain showers Saturday afternoon, topping Eastern 329-379 in a dual match at recently-renovated Rock Manor Country Club.
Garnet freshman Alex Nichamin (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) was the low-man into the clubhouse with a score of 81, besting classmate Paul Weston ’12 (Waterbury, Vt. / Harwood Union) by one stroke. Teammates Michael Bernasek ’09 (Fairfield, Conn. / Hopkins School) and David Lau ’09 (Hong Kong, China / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) trailed Nichamin by two strokes, posting matching scores of 83.
The Eagles’ squad was led on Saturday afternoon by Drew Kupp (91) and Josh Reid (92) on a day that saw the teams battle rain showers through the front nine.
Rock Manor, originally built in 1921, was recently lengthened by nearly 700 yards by golf-course architect while a new irrigation system was installed to survive the brutal playing conditions in the Delaware Valley.
Swarthmore returns to its home course on Monday, April 13, hosting Drexel University and Ursinus College at Rolling Green Golf Club. Tee times are scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
